If you're a photographer or anyone who has been in KC for a while, you certainly know about the West Bottoms and all of the great unique spots it has to offer! It's definitely a photographer's dream because there's a whole new backdrop every time you turn a corner. There are some great businesses, restaurants and studios down in this area if you haven't gone exploring yet, make sure you check it out asap! It is one of my favorite spots to shoot high school senior sessions for sure. And the cool thing is that it is ever evolving! There is always something new every time I go back.

The country club plaza, kansas city


The Plaza is known for its Spanish-inspired architecture, with stucco buildings, red tile roofs, ornate towers, arches, decorative tile beautiful ironwork. There are fountains and sculptures tucked throughout the area, along with colorful storefronts, courtyards, stairways and little architectural details that make great backdrops. This means that your senior session would have a ton of variety and create a different look just by walking a few minutes. Switching things up between greenery, fountains or a charming tucked-away corner. For this session, we had amazing golden hour lighting combined with pops of bold color with her outfit and various backdrops we found. We got lucky to find this super cute painted wall!

Country Club Plaza Senior Session

kansas city parks & nature preserves


We all know there are countless parks, woods and nature preserves in Kansas City and surrounding areas, each with their own vibe! So much to choose from which makes us KC Missouri residents pretty lucky! Some of my favorite parks for senior sessions have been Loose Park, Shawnee Mission Park, and Burr Oaks Conservatory. This is a very shortened list as there are so many more places to explore!

Nelson atkins art museum, kansas city


The Nelson Atkins is definitely one of those locations you just have to keep going back to. Not only to walk around inside and witness the most mind-blowing artwork ever created, but because the whole building and surrounding lawn is just gorgeous. The museum was built in 1933 and designed by Wight and Wight in the "Baux-Arts" architectural style. One of my favorite things to do is to take my family there for picnics on the lawn. You can literally just lay on a blanket and take the most relaxing nap ever! Using this location for your senior pictures just makes sense too. Lots of greenery, a beautiful reflecting pool and the combination of modern and classical architecture.

power & light district, kansas city


The Power & Light disctrict has to be one of the most fun locations to shoot in the Kansas City area. City skyline, lights and color all around! You just can't go wrong. First, we start at golden hour to get some glowy golden light and then once the sun starts dropping in the sky - blue hour shows itself. Pastel painterly skies combined with the KC city scape is absolutely breathtaking. This session was with my daughter to celebrate her Freshman year homecoming!

No it wasn't a senior photo session, but did you know you can book a shoot even if you're not a Senior or Junior? ;)

botanical gardens & flower fields in kansas city


I think flower field sessions have to be number one on the list for sure. My clients most often request wildflower sessions and for good reason. Combining the gorgeous light, colors and textures of nature into one epic photoshoot is just magical. My senior girls love the soft feminine vibes captured during their session, and of course picking a bouquet to take home is a bonus! This session at Where the Wild Flowers Bloom was absolutely gorgeous for sure.

A few other locations in the Kansas City area include Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Powell Gardens, Grinter Farms and Hidden Acres Farms.

college & high school campuses in kansas city


If you are graduating high school or college, the obvious location for your session would be to include your school campus! We can shoot here for senior pictures or for a cap & gown session. College campuses nearby include UMKC, University of Kansas, Rockhurst University and University of Central Missouri. High Schools include Blue Valley High, Shawnee Mission Schools, Pembroke Hill, Olathe Schools, Mill Valley High, Lee's Summit High, and Blue Springs High among many more! Get that cap & gown steamed and ready to go!
